I thought Super Sunday was next Sunday...

So who saw any of these deals coming? Lets start off by saying Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs, along with their dancing partners the Calgary Flames and Anehiem Ducks, pulled off some Disney Magic today. It was fun waking up first thing in the morning and seeing the reporters at TSN say that there is going to be a major shake up in Leaf Land. Everyone was assuming the coach was going to be fired, when that didn't happen the rumours started flooding.

Now, as great as these deals are, all the teams involved are winners. Only time will tell who is the true winner out of it all. What I mean is this; in a Salary Cap world, you either spend your money wisely or you see yourself in loads of trouble and its really hard to shovel yourself out. Deal One of the day, is the deal that sends Stajan, Hagman, White, and Mayers to Colorado for Phaneuf, Aulie and Sjostrom. Now for the not so regular NHL followers out there reading this, your thinking well that Phaneuf guy is the only one I know, and thats because he's going out with that chick that was in a Porno (she wasn't in a Porno, she played a porn actress who wanted to get out...don't they all). Now lets look at this deal, strictly from a hockey perspective. The Leafs give up their number 1 centreman (he's at best the number 2 centreman on a playoff team, on a very good team he's a number three, ala my previous posts before), a prolific sniper, a number four centreman who could barely find ice time on the Leafs (but in his last two games in Blue and White, he did get 3 points), and a defenseman who has single handily been their most consistent defender this season. In the deal, the Leafs get a vital two way player in Frederick Sjostrom. Every one's been ragging on this player, asking who he is and what he does, he's actually a very vital piece to the puzzle, and I will tell you why. Sjostrom can score, but not like Swedes of the past, he can defend quite well. Now noone in their right mind is going to say this kid is the next Henrick Zetterberg, but lets be honest if he gives us 12 minutes of Ice Time a game, consider that a blessing. He's also a reliable PK guy who can skate fast (something the Leafs never had). Keith Aulie is one of those wild cards in this trade. This 20 year old comes in at 6'6" and close to 220lbs. He's a rock solid defenseman, whose won a World Junior Hockey Championship, and currently plays for the Abbotsford Heat of the AHL. Burke's said he's staying there, which is a smart move considering you've got 6 defenseman in the big club already. Finaly, big Dion Phaneuf. In the words of Pierre McGuire during the 2005 world Juniors, this guy is a MONSTER!!! He's got a cannon of a shot, and will always pull out a huge hit. The only way I can describe that style of play, Al McInnis's slap shot, and Scott Stevens shoulder. If it was Phaneuf playing Chicken against a car, I'd bet on Dion any day!

Now Lets, look at this deal strictly from an economic point of view. Stajan and Mayers are Unrestricted Free Agents, that means that unless they are inked to an extension. they will be free to sign with whomever they want starting July 1st. Ian White is a restricted Free Agent, and if he doesn't sign an extension before July 1st, he will be open to sign an offer sheet with anyone in the league, however the Calgary Flames (or who ever holds his rights) will be able to match it. Hagman remains the only player on the team with a contract obligation, 2 years and 3 million per year owed to him (a total of 6 million). This is what the Flames have taken on (assuming they don't resign Mayers and Stajan). The Leafs, on the other hand, have taken on a couple of salaries for the Flames. Sjostrom earns $750,000.00 next season (and in the summer of 2011, he becomes a UFA). Dion Phaneuf becomes a cap hit till 2014, and is owed 6,5 Milliuon per year. The Leafs have aways said we'll eat up the big salaries, but this is surprising especially since Phaneuf is only 24. So in 2010 season, the Leafs add 7.25 million dollars to their cap number, and the Flames assuming Stajan and Mayers aren't signed (and not knowing White's number) add 3 million to their number.

Now, deals are won or lost in the future, as its always easier to say woulda shoulda coulda (or in a lot of cases wouldn't have, shouldn't have, couldn't have). But anytime your not giving up much for a Stud Defenseman (along with a young strong defenseman) the deal has to be a win. Right now, when Mike Komisarek returns from his injury, the leafs will have a top six defensemen looking like this. Kaberle, and Phaneuf, Komisarek and Beauchimen, Gunnarson and Schenn. I don't know what Wilson will do, but I like that top pairing, however I think Komi, and Beauche, should be split up and put with the Kids. Now how do the forwards look, well the one need is still a number one centreman, and time will tell on that.

The second deal of the day, took a little bit of time, however once it was done, it was no surprise. J.S. Gigure of the Ducks, became a Leaf. When I first heard the rumoured deal, I was told that it was Vesa Toskala for J.S. Gigure and a 1st Round Draft choice. I was thinking great, the Leafs bought them selves a first round pick, this is what they should have been doing all the time (Gigure has 1 year left on his term and is owed 7 million dollars, although his cap hit is 6 million). However, when the deal was announced it was in fact, J.S. Giggy, and going to the Ducks was Vesa and JASON BLAKE. Now I don't know about you, but Brian Burke deserves an award for this deal, he just shipped off one of the worst contracts in NHL history. Blake had 2 years left on his current deal and 8 million owed to him over the two years. Now I would have rather had a first rounder coming back in the deal, but wow that salary off the Leafs books is amazing!!! Hopefully now Jason Blake will get a decent tan in that southern California weather.

My first reaction to these deals was excitement, as having a Stud Defenseman coming to Toronto is a real gem here. Phaneuf is 24, he's young, talented, strong, and has a shot like a mother fucker (that girlfriend of his knows...yeah I went there). This is the movie I was talking bout she's pretty hot..

And now that Phaneuf is on the East coast...can we expect him to clock Mr. Sean Avery for this comment????

There is one thing that should be said about these deals. With about 30 games left in the season, and the leafs requiring at most 25 wins out of the 30 games left, to just make the playoffs...can they do it. Another question that has to be asked, did Burke make these moves to make the team better for the future, or was this a move to make the team better now to ensure that Boston might not get a top 10 pick? Either way, we'll find out soon enough as to the fate of the Toronto Maple Leafs...for sportcentre I'm...lol sorry had to.

Hope this was enjoyable, it was an entertaining period of time, I had my Blackberry Buzzing all day feeling like a NHL GM and letting people know of the trades. Lets look forward to the Olympics and the NHL Trade Deadline in March, it should be a dandy this year!

Is the NHL Destiny commercial going to show Phaneuf more now????

Remember Sloppy Seconds aren't for everyone, some thrive in a situation, where as others just shrink down and can't do anything right...

Part 3 - Biggest Suprises/Disappointments 1/2 way point of the NBA Season

Big Disappointments

Vince Carter and the Orlando Magic

Vince Carter gets traded to the Magic and finally became Jerry Stackhouse and brought voodoo or black magic with him to this squad. The problem here is not entirely Vince, I can honestly attribute the issues here to a few things:
-being too stacked, well the starting five
-changing offensively the formula for your success over the last few years (vince arrives, gets all the shots now... how does that work)
-Injuries, Vince Carter, Jameer Nelson
-Lewis suspension really hurt them, not while he was gone but when he returned, they haven’t been able to find the right formula
-Dwight Howard feels that by showing up to arena’s you get wins.....
I can go on and on, but the fact that these guys have been so shit as of late, it’s just been mind boggling and frustrating watching them play. I would not be surprised to see some serious moves before trade deadline on their behalf, cause there in total panic mode right now in Orlando. I can actually honestly blog about this on its own, as its own piece and you know what i will...
Vince Carter, say what you want but the man can put the ball in the hoop and has been doing it since he entered the league. Last year Vince had one of the nicest stat lines to look out for a season and only missed the all star cut because of the fact he played for shit nets squad that was rebuilding, and they couldn’t give the nod to two all stars from one shit squad. He’s become Jerry Stackhouse, I always knew he would become Stackhouse in the latter part of his career but he’ hit him dead on this season. Vince has become a total 3 pt shooter, and jump shooter. He has been knocked for that in the past but if you were watching the nets over the last few years, he was a constant threat off the dribble and on the shot. The Magic play that inside out style, which encourages and almost forces the guys to become shooters, and considering Vince has never really “gotten it” he’ll take his jumpers all day not realizing how he can be effective in an offense.
Dwight Howard....this guy has taken a considerable step back in my view. He gets all the numbers and stats that you’d love if you played in a fantasy basketball league, but this is real life son. Get your shit together. I don’t know what it is this season or what has happened to him, but he’s been put in check by weak ass centers this season, one i can think of right of the top of my head, Andrew Bargs.... Bargs actually kept this dude in check last time they played. That should never happen. This team’s success is entirely on his massive shoulders, figuratively and literally. Its a hard to really say what exactly is going wrong on Orlando, i mean on paper that starting five should win you at least 60 games plus, so what is it coaching, not gelling, expectations to much pressure....i don’t know.
The change here that killed all of their hopes I think this season in my opinion, is the fact that Hedo is gone. That guy was a real, real asset for this squad. As the point forward, he did what he had to do to get the ball in the hands of the guys who needed it, controlled the offense the way it should be and was a killer because he played off Dwight Howard. Hedo understood how successful he could be playing with a force like Howard and it translated into a 50MM dollar deal in free agency. Until someone else on this team mimics or understands how to play alongside Dwight (cough cough vince carter), their gonna be out of the first round this season....

Hedo
Honestly, WTF. Look at his numbers since December, and tell me is he a 50MM dollar player? I remember cooling out in Trinidad at a bar with my boy Kareem and watching Hedo play against the Cavs in the playoffs last season, and he was just ridiculous. I remember discussing with friends of mine over the past couple of seasons basically saying that Hedo is the best player on the Magic. The guy was just a beast and could do everything you wanted in a SF. Then he comes to Toronto and that’s where the dream ended so to speak. Colangelo has a definite hard on for non African American players and truly believes that a euro type roaster can have success in the NBA. Well in the words of Charlie Murphy...WRONG. WRONG. He went out of his way to nab Hedo from Portland, an all but done deal, and paid him more than Hedo bargained for, hoping that his success last season would translate on the Raptors. Ill be the first to say, I was actually excited for this acquisition thinking that Hedo would be that key piece to bring Bargs/Bosh and the Raps together and make them a force in the East.
Hedo is a god damn liability when he’s on the court now. He’s shooting a dismal 20% from the field if I remember, consistently gets beaten defensively causing him to pick up stupid ass fouls every game. Looks tired half the time, and like he really doesn’t give a shit. Hedo has been terrible this season, and its actually to the point where it’s shameful and embarrassing that someone who makes over 10MM a year plays like this. Triano is still a puppet to BC, but eventually something has got to give and the coach needs to yank this over paid shit head out of the starting lineup. Like I said he’s a disappointment and a liability on the court. Hedo looked great last year cause he understood how to play with Dwight Howard, this season, he is forced to take on more responsibility and does not have a 7ft genetic freak of nature to hide behind. Hedo, get your shit together buddy.....seriously.

on top of it, this douche implied on national tv, that he needs the ball to be successfull, ill let you guys read more into this, but its pretty evident what he is trying to get at....

All Star Voting

I have actually spoken enough about this so just take a look at these previous posts, and see my thoughts and views on this retarded format to conduct a vote.

Kevin Sunder
He is the co-founder of this site, and in general has always has just been a pain in my ass. He consistently pisses me off with his views and total bullshit. Honestly sometimes he has no idea what the hell he’s talking about. He doesn’t like Jordan, Bryant or any other solid player. He’s into players like, Mamadu Ndinjayne, Flip Murray and he’s huge, hugggeeee fan of AND 1 baskeball and “The Professor.”
He also owns a JR Ryder Jersey, and talks so much shit....
For instance,
“Kev, OKC is sick bro, im loving this squad this year, i hope they do well. You are also a kind man and a good person...” - now thats me in general speaking ball with my pal Sunder
Now here is a typical response from Sunder:
“Honestly first of all shut the fuck up Kevin. I don’t wanna hear about it, they shouldn’t be there, I don’t like people from Oklahoma, they should still be in Seattle. “

Now this is me. “ But Kev, why are you hitting me, and they had to move for financial reasons, and the fact that the city of Seattle just stopped embracing the team...”
Sunder : “ Ok did you not hear what I said do i have to hit you again....listen, the team belongs in Seattle, i like Detleff Shremp ...”
You see not only is he totally fucked, he’s an abusive person both physically and mentally. We started this site to rant about sports, well basketball in general and this guy is too busy making his remakes of films starring his favourite actor of all time, Hugh Grant.
Anyhow Sunder is not so much disappointing more so a total piss off for me. But he’s an ok friend and likes to booze. So we get along. He’s still rooting for his Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors....this week, next week when the next hot squad comes up, he’ll be on that band wagon.

Remember the times

Watching ball in the 90's, there are 2 things I remember. 1) Jordan dominated that era and 2) it was a tougher era where fouls were fouls. When thinking about this, I realized ball players in the 90's were tougher and one reason was the music that they listened to. Majority of players in the NBA listen to hip hop and during my life time of listening to music, early 90's hip hop was at it's best. Can you imagine what the Bulls-Knicks rivalry would be like if they were geeked up to Soulja Boy Tell Em? I didn't think so.

You had those ballers listening to "Slam" by Onyx when they were going to war, not this bubble gum garbage today. Back then, you had groups like Tribe, NWA, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Fu Schnickens, Souls of Mischief, Public Enemy as well as Biggie, Pac, Snoop, Nas and Dre. We all listen to music to either get inspired, motivated, express our thoughts or even just to chill. The best rivalry of the 90's was easily the Bulls vs Knicks. You had a Knicks team that was trying to make that next step, except Jordan was there to knock them back down. This rivalry defined the NBA in the 90's and it didn't hurt that you had ballers like Jordan, Oakley, Pippen, Ewing, Starks, Grant, and Big Kev's idol; Anthony Mason ripping each other every spring. Does anyone remember when they were fighting right in front of David Stern? Good times.
The game today is played with more finesse and athleticism as athletes today are just natural freaks (LeBron and Dwight Howard). I can't even imagine what these guys are listening to get jacked up before a game. I feel sorry for today's generation as the music they listening today will be their old school in 10 years. Imagine any dirty south rapper being old school? Disgusting. If today's generation wants to know what good music and basketball was, look back to the 90's. Hell, look at the rivalries with Celtics-Lakers, Pistons-Lakers and Bulls-Pistons. These rivalries help define the league and their superstars. We need this raw energy back in the game. Enough of this hugging the opposing team crap. Can you imagine Oakley and Jordan doing this? As I end this post, I leave you with a reminder of what hip hop used to be. If you see it around, tell it, we miss it and wish it was still here.

Part 2 - Biggest Suprises/Disappointments 1/2 way point of the NBA Season

This is part 2 of the segment i started earlier this week, here are some more surprises this season at the half.

Brandon Jennings/Tyreke Evans
Its been a long time since I have looked at rookie guards and said to myself, WTF.....These two guys are just amazing. Brandon Jennings for the first 3 months of this season was in the MVP race if you ask me, he’s just been phenomenal. Besides his scoring savvy (55pts outburst) the guy just understands the dynamics of the game. Being undersized at the one and in terms of a proto typical NBA player, he uses his speed, explosiveness and IQ to do whatever he wants on the court. Playing under Scott Skiles has been another advantage for him, and Skiles himself has showed gratitude and talked very highly of his PG of the future.
Tyreke Evans = STUD. Evans was destined for greatness since he was drafted. His build, and demeanour were already NBA super star material. His ability to play the 1 and 2 effectively is just amazing and being on a shitty Kings squad where he has been forced to learn and be the man, has already made him an All Star calibre player in my view. He plays with a grace if you guys get what im saying, everything he does is so effortless yet so effective, much like Brandon Roy, and i truly feel he will become a Brandon Roy type of player for this Kings squad in the future, statistically and leadership wise. I also drafted him in my dynasty league this year...bbboooooyyyaaaa...(which im currently dismantling the rest of the people in) and honestly Tyreke gets the start over a lot of 1/2nd rounder’s on my squad weekly, why? Cause he’s just incredible, every game if you look at the box score you know he’s made his mark and done everything he can do to try to get a “W”.

Steve Nash
He’s turning 36 very, very soon if my memory serves me correctly .... He looks better then ummm Chris Paul and Deron Williams and has basically in my view, solidified himself as the best PG this game has seen in the last 8 years or so. The Suns are one of those surprise teams this year as well, due to the fact that they have taken a step back so to speak over the last few years. The squad is ageing, they had lost some key pieces over the last few years to trades or free agency and looked to be rebuilding slowly. Nash however has had a different mindset since day one. He’s playing his heart out and as a little PG is 3rd in the league in double doubles, leads the league in assists, and has just been the Nash of the MVP eras for the better part of this whole season. I am interested to see how they fair in the playoffs this season, I really like Gentry as the Head Coach there, I do think they make a move on trade deadline to get another solid piece to help them in the playoffs; it will be interesting to see if they can maintain this solid play as the season progresses. As long as Nash is playing the way he does, they will continually have a fighting chance.

Rajon Rondo
This guy is your true starting point guard for this year’s 2010 Eastern Conference All Star Team. Boston has been solid since they made the move to get the big three, but even after last season they should be the big four. Rajon has played better and better as each year has gone on, and this year, due to injuries he’s been willing this team to wins. Playing alongside Ray Allen and Paul Pierce (in my opinion the man who owns boston) has really helped his game out. This season though, since game one he has put it altogether. A constant triple double threat, defensive specialist and leader on the court, this guy has everyone playing around him great. Making shit ass players look good, something only the Raptors are capable of doing. Rajon Rondo is also a great guy, you never hear about him doing stupid shit, or running his mouth. He truly lets his game speak and everyone around the league has taken notice and finally given the young point guard his due.

Book of the month: "Fab Five: Basketball, Trash Talk, the American Dream"

“A mind is a terrible thing to waste” – One of my biggest issues with this new generation is their lack of interest in reading books. So I am going to start a new segment in this blog to encourage our followers to read more. Winston Churchill (wiki it if you don’t know who that is….and don’t tell anyone you did) used to read a book every night, even in the midst of wars because he said that it makes him think better. So I can’t stress the importance of reading books. I guess you can call it my own version of “Read to Achieve” program.

My book recommendation for this month is a must have novel for all basketball fans. It’s an easy to read book in paperback. Not that expensive. Definitely worth the investment.

My generation was lucky enough to witness this special group and what they did for basketball in general. If you don’t believe me, ask yourself next time why you can get away with wearing the baggy ball shorts or the black socks and shoes. Many of us wouldn’t have this option today if the Fab 5 didn’t put up the fight for us much like when Rosa Park wouldn’t give her seat up in the bus. This novel is an incredible novel of a journey of 5 college players who changed the face of college basketball forever. It does an incredible job of recounting the remarkable story of University of Michigan basketball players Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson, and chronicles their success in the NCAA tournaments of 1992 and 1993.

Once you read it, you will have a better appreciation for C-Webb or Jalen the next time you see them on ESPN or NBA TV or TNT commentating. Juwan is still the only player in the league and I hope the Portland players appreciate the legend that they have in their locker room. Both Jimmy and Ray have not surfaced in a very long time – I do miss Jimmy (although he was a Raptor for a very short time). Hope they are finding a decent way to make a living as well.

Let me know how you liked reading the book.

What if......

On Thursday night, the sports world saw something special that doesn't happen very often on the same night. In the NBA, it was the Cavs vs. the Lakers, aka LeBron vs. Kobe. In the NHL however, it was the Penguins vs. Capitals, aka Sid the Kid vs. Alex the Great. Throughout the day, I was thinking about how lucky the NBA is. Not only do they have two marketable stars who are the faces of the league, but one is on the west coast and the other on the east coast, allowing TV ratings to really benefit in a double header situation. The NBA's northern ice cousin (I guess) isn't so fortunate. The two most recognizable faces in the National Hockey League, are both part of the Eastern Conference. This makes New York, Boston and Philadelphia very happy, as two of the biggest stars are playing in those big markets all the time, but it doesn't do anything for the West. So this got me thinking, the year that Sidney Crosby was drafted, the year before was the lockout. The NHL had formulated some sort of structure that allowed all teams to have somewhat of a chance to land the first overall pick, which would be undoubtedly Sid the Kid. Pittsburgh as we all know, won that draft, however its who came in second that is most interesting. The Might Ducks of Anaheim, as they were once upon a time called, picked second (which ended up being a U.S. Junior player by the name of Bobby Ryan). Now how much of the league's dynamic would have changed, if the picks would have been flipped? Lets analyze it shall we...
The Pittsburgh Penguins, coming off some very bad seasons always picking within the top five of the draft, had already in their system the rights to Evgeni Malkin and Marc Andre Fleury. Looking at those two players now, as they were instrumental in Pittsburgh two Stanley Cup runs have been great for them. However, we have to remember. Sidney Crosby flipped the whole team around, the reason why Pittsburgh still has a team, and a new arena to be opening up is because of 2005 draft. Further more, the franchise was in trouble. Nothing was going right, levels of government weren't approving anything for the Penguins, but opening new stadiums for the Pirates and Steelers. Hockey in Pittsburgh was dying.
The Anaheim Ducks, were coming off some years in which they were making the playoffs, and drafted quite well despite having mid level picks. Players like Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry were in the farm system playing Junior Hockey but Ducks property. Not only that but, in the summer of 2005, Brian Burke pulled off one of the biggest steals in franchise history by getting his hands on Scott Neidermeyer, by convincing him to play in Southern California with his brother. The Ducks were never playing second fiddle to anyone, as they were playing out of a great hockey only arena in Anaheim, and the closest competition for them was the Los Angeles Kings who were under some horrible management that could not attract any good players. Ownership in Anaheim was shaky, however after the lockout Disney sold off the team to the Samuelle Family (who are now serving time in jail, but that's a different story).
So what would have happened if the Ping Pong balls had a Ducks logo instead of a Penguins logo in the summer of 2005? The dynamic of the NHL would have changed drastically. Sidney Crosby would be the face of Southern California hockey. Lets face it, when he went to Pittsburgh, he was on GQ, Esquire and Reebok was taking off, now imagine all that, on the sunny beaches of California. Some of the epic battles Crosby would have against Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Detroit Colorado and Chicago. We've seen the Gretzky result based on the number of U.S. players born in non traditional hockey markets in the states, and I think that if Crosby was playing hockey in Souther California, it would be just as great. Lets not lie, when we watch our Toronto Maple Leafs play some of these west coast teams, its fun to watch them, not just because we don't see them enough, but they play such a fast paced game that is just refreshing to watch. Its also safe to assume, that if the Ducks won that draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins would be playing out of Kansas City at this point. The team wasn't attracting fans, it wasn't attracting first class free agents, the death of the Pittsburgh Penguins would have occurred (and that's no offense to Bobby Ryan, who would have been taken second in the draft). I'm sure the NHL would have loved to have the New York Rangers win that draft lottery...market the best young player in the league in the biggest media market in the world. But the league would have changed if the Southern California Ducks landed Sid the Kid.

Imagine Crosby to Getzlaf for the win....oh wait...we might not have to wait that long, both will be representing Canada in February!!!

Part 1 - Biggest Suprises/Disappointments 1/2 way point of the NBA Season

This is the ½ way point of the NBA season, and there have been some big surprises and big disappointments. I have taken the liberty to compile the list, because seriously, what blog would be complete without this list....to follow, ½ season awards, done by the founders of this site....Now im gonna ration this post out over the next few days, cause each tidbit is pretty long, detailed and AMAZING.

“Big Surprise....Huge Surprise...” – van damme double impact referring to his dills....

Emergence of the Grizz and Thunder

The Mephis Grizz have been ripping it over the last month and a half. Since day one of this NBA season you could see that the entire team “got it”. The fact that Rudy Gay is “getting it” and putting together is one reason for their emergence but this team has been put together so nicely that a lot of other squads in the league need to take note, i.e. RAPTORS, Clippers, RAPTORS, Kings, RAPTORS, RAPTORS and RAPTORS. Anyhow, OJ Mayo is a consummate professional, he can do everything and his ability to accommodate his team mates and unselfish play is just so refreshing to watch. This is a guy who has been touted since he was 15 years old and always destined for superstardom as an individual in the NBA. But his idea of superstardom, is winning and getting it done, it’s amazing to see how he plays within a team concept and do what it takes to win a game.
The development of Gasol, Conley and Warrick’s fierce play all contribute to the fact that this team is on a roll. The biggest reason why these guys are killing it though in my opinion is one of my favourite players to date. Zach Randolph. A lot of people don’t like him and I really don’t know why. He’s been putting up 20/10 since his 3rd year in the league. That is what he does. He puts up 20/10 everywhere he goes, and this year not only is he doing that in Memphis but he is acting as a veteran leader on a squad full of young’ins. They play with heart and hard work and each guy on this squad knows their role. Ill love to see these guys battle it out down the stretch with the other power houses in the West as this season progresses.

OKC, only have one thing to say about them. Kevin Durant. Well I obviously have more to say but Kevin Durant has just been on fire, and this guy has leapt from being a rising to star in this league to a full out bonified NBA scoring machine super star stud. The guys is just unbelievable, like Memphis he has all the right pieces around him to succeed. But unlike Memphis, whose team was built through free agency, trades and the draft. This OKC squad has been entirely built through the NBA Draft, will the core at least. Russell Westbrook, Jeff Green and James Harden, the architect of this squad needs to be commended for a great job in finding the right talent and the right guys who “get it” right off the bat. Westbrook has emerged as one of the best Point Guards in the game and can do it all, distribute, drive and control an offense full of fire power. He gets the right guy the ball always at the right time, on top of these fine traits his explosiveness and athleticism is just off the charts. Jeff Green, drafted alongside Kevin Durant has been a great glue piece and secondary scorer for them, however he does need to work on his consistency to truly become the “Pippen” to Durant’s Jordan on this squad. Harden as a rookie, has been solid and has a really high basketball IQ and will definitely play a larger role on offense over the next few years until he finds his niche. But again another guy who gets it, and is willing to do what it takes to win, he has a great build, great defensive skills, can score and handle the ball. Factor in Collison, Nenad and Thabo, and you have a great amount of role players who can all play defence, rebound and play hard.

I really hope that both these squads make the playoff cut in the west which is a really hard task, but if so, they will cause fits in a eight game series and could possibly pull of some great upsets.

ALLLLLLoooooooo, this is the weekly preview for the GOAT of sports blogs on the net. Looking at certain "computer high tech back end systems" over the past few days and I can see we are getting a little bit of a following...pretty cool! It was really never the intention to get crazy notice for this blog but people seem to like what we have to say well at least what i have to say (hehehehe) and keep on coming, so thanks so much for the love people.

Live Blog - LAL@Raps - we f'n won!!!!

This is the victory shot, on my twitter feed I posted a vid of kobe's clunker at the buzzer. You can see it at @_bigkev_ add me I keep it private.
Anyhow this was one of the most enjoyable games I have been too, well since vince carter came and dropped 43 and won at the buzzer. The Raps were owned on the board battle all night, Kobe had like 16 tonight to prove my case. But the Raptors held on, and made shots and stops when it mattered...FINALLY. Hedo, looked like a lost cause on the final play but managed to take it to the hole and nail two free throws to ice this win. Awesome finish. I honestly thought I'd see Kobe win this with 1.2 seconds to go but it was in and out.

These are the type of wins we need to build on, players gain confidence and it boasts the moral of everyone from the coaches to the bench. My next game is on Wednesday @ home against Miami, that should be another scrappy affair but its a game we can win. I'm still in awe of Kobe and stil can't believe we won....

Live Blog - LAL@Raps - we need bigs like Bynum and Gasol

Its 40-48 as I write this, and honestly we're playing ok, but this game on the rebounding battle has all been LAL. This game is gonna be close because both squads are shooting really well. This game though will be won from whoever has the rebounding advantage....

Gasol, is actually really fucking sick honestly. He's so good, like really good. Bynum looks great, this whole team just looks great. There like f'n rockstars, enough people cheering for them in the ACC which is pretty cool.....

Ill blog some more in the 2nd half, any updates in the NFL for me ??!!!

Live Blog - LAL@Raps - LAL is Sick....

This game has been so ill so far, Kobe just had a sick put back, its 5-10 LAL right now, and honestly its gonna be like this all game.
Different seats tonight, steel band just setup, sherm, virk and armstrong are sitting right by me....

More importantly I need that bum Hedo to score at least 12 points or get 3 boards to secure a fantasy victory in my dynasty league, let's see if he can score even 10. Bynum just had a put back, honestly this starting five is insane, its already 5-14.

LAL is crazy. Everytime they score its as if there at home.

Live Blog - LAL@Raps

I am just really excited about this game, Lakers took the court, they showed Kobe in the tunnel on the screen, what happened next was classic. Standing ovation, they hit the courts for the warm up, and this picture, if you look at the free throw line. That's him, back turned and all.

I'm with a couple friends and my girlfriend, she has the camera and is taking some nice shots, that'll be posted on twitter....or facebook or somewhere.

Ill keep this posted as much as I can today, unlike the Dallas game I'm going to be going nuts when I see Kobe tonight. Ohhhh, the Raptors just came out, and as usual sunny jones and the boys are dancing like fools.

Anyone wanna keep me updated on the football game???

“Do not bark up at the wrong tree or the tree will fall on you!” – The Takeover, Jay-Z

There are turning points (some for the worse or some for the better) in an NBA season. Last night’s loss to Cleveland will be that turning point that will unleash the demons that we have not seen in Kobe in the last few years. Last night was supposed to be the night for redemption from the Christmas day massacre. Lakers vs. Cavs; nationally televised, broken finger, SHAQ-FU and not to mention Craig sager and his ugly coat. Couldn’t have been a better stage for two of Nike’s puppets to battle it out. This is one game Cleveland will look back and ask themselves if they should have really won it. The crowd didn’t help either egging on with chants of MVP for the wrong guy again. Kobe walked off the court with a look in his eye that reminded me of last game in the 2008 NBA finals. We all know what happened in 2009 as a result. The very same wake-up call was sent again last night by the Cavs sweeping the Lakers for the season. I cannot wait to set my PVR to record the fury that # 24 is going to unleash on the league for rest of this season with or without his team. Thank you Cleveland for what you did last night. You would have been better off throwing a cup of beer on Ron Artest then what you did to Kobe last night. There is a reason why you should never get David Banner angry. God help whoever is guarding him in New York tonight.

Iverson Update...In His Own Words!

Here is a quick update on the Iverson situation that I blogged about earlier today....love him or hate him, the man is an icon and I guess he has earned it whether we all like it or not! (Article via ESPN.com)

Oh yah I know we "blog" but this story just fit so well with what I had written previously, I had to shoot this on here as an addition.

Allen Iverson makes no apologies for All-Star Game start

Allen Iverson makes no apologies for being voted to start in the All-Star Game and doesn't care about critics who say he doesn't deserve to be there.

WWAID - what would allen iverson do.....

So if your Allen Iverson, what do you do? Honestly, he's in a catch 22.

He's in the twilight of his storied career and this can and possibly will be the last opportunity he has to play in an all star game. The fans voted him on, meaning at least 2mm people wanna see this guy play and people, like myself just love watching AI ball.
On the other hand, he's played sporadically, had a huge debacle in the beginning of the season, and has been finally hit with the injury bug, and on top of it his averages this season are well below his career averages. Statistically this is the worst year of his career.

I am honestly at a cross road on this myself, its really a tough spot to be in. The right thing to do is to relinquish your starting spot and give someone who's younger a chance, somebody like Rajon Rondo, he's been carrying the Celtics all season long, plays the one spot and should finally get his just due. Iverson moves to the bench but still remains an all star and it would be considered a classy move, passing of the torch so to speak. It could essentially wipe away any tarnish and shit from his storied career over the last couple seasons. He could go out the right way.....

But that's wishful thinking, we're talking about the NBA, after the NFL the biggest egos in the sports world are here. Let's see how it shapes out and how its perceived by his peers. In my opinion the venue this year is crazy, the cowboys stadium, but so far these two all star teams are a little blahhh...

They really need to change things and bring the prestige back to the NBA All Star weekend. My predictions, hmmmm....
East wins by 12....Lebron James wins your all star mvp because even in a recreation game, Lebron is still looking to pad his stats.

The Real 2010 NBA ALL STAR TEAM

NBA All Star Starters were announced a couple hours ago, and this year, I have a huge ass problem with them, it can all be attributed to the bloody fan voting, which i blogged about a day ago on here but check the teams before i tell you who should be an all star....Im keeping this short and to the point, i went on and on in my last blog about what i think, this is just my view on the TRUE All Star Team.

here is the east as voted by the douche fan's

here is the west as voted by the douche fan's

now this is what the team should look like if it were based on the best players, on solid teams or teams that are playing with heart, at this point in the NBA season, format here, 5 starters, 6 bench:

EAST STARTERS:

RONDO
WADE
LEBRON
BOSH
HOWARD

EAST BENCH (THIS IS F'N TOUGH)

JOE JOHNSON
JOSH SMITH
DAVID LEE
GERALD WALLACE
PAUL PIERCE
RAY ALLEN

on the bubble....
Al Horford
Kevin Garnett
Andre Igo
Danny Granger

WEST STARTERS

NASH
SOME GUY NAMED "KOBE"
MELO
DIRK
DUNCAN

WEST BENCH

PAO GASOL
DERON WILLIAMS
CHRIS KAMAN
ZACH RANDOLPH
KEVIN DURANT
BRANDON ROY

on the bubble....
Chris Paul
Rudy Gay
OJ Mayo
Amare Stoudamire
Tyreke Evans

The following players I listed are at the top of their games right now, and are either the best or in the top 2/3 conversation at their postion in the league right now. Each player has played consistently, with heart, have the stats and wins to prove it. Kaman, is the exception on this list because he is on LAC, but find me a 5 who gives you 22/10/3/2 a game.....you cant.

I ranted before about my feeling about the how the teams are selected cause guys like Durant/Kaman/Bosh do not get the love they deserve. The on the bubble are basically all stars, but if you have to short list, they just miss it, just barley...

Road Trip....1-2

So the leafs are off on a road trip...four out of five games are are against eastern conference teams (all of which are ahead of them).  However, the Leafs being the Enigma that they are, they'll probably win a couple of these games.  a 3-2 record on this road trip will be deemed a success, and not completely blow their playoff chances, or at least get them out of the top five pick in the 2010 draft.  With that being said, the leafs now need to go 2-0 in Florida, which doesn't seem like an astronomically difficult chore, however again knowing our Leafs, they will figure out a way to blow it.

One thing that I've noticed...Tosakala can't start any more games.  The Leafs made a decision in the summer when they signed the Monster, that he was going to be their long term goaltending solution.  Toskala is in the final year of his contract, and I can almost 100% assure you, he will not be retained by the club.  Jonas is the long term solution, and if you really want to see what he's about, let him start almost every game for the remainder of the season.  At least he gives you a chance to win, where as Toskala will just jump for the puck and see it bounce in behind him.  One of the things that Jonas will definitely benefit from is being the backup goaltender for Sweden in the 2010 Olympics (only a couple of weeks away).  Being the back up to Sir Henrik, will definitely allow him to learn more about the game.  I remember when I played hockey, you learned a lot about the game from sitting on the bench, and I think him having an opportunity to watch a world class goaltender will be a huge learning experience for him.  If he gets to start on the big stage, then even better.  One thing is for certain, if the Leafs don't make the playoffs, you better believe the Monster is representing the Yellow and Blue of Sweden in the World Hockey Championships.

In a previous posting, I mentioned the Leafs needed to bring Bozak up from the Marlies.  Now here is the next player that I think should come up soon.  Christian Hanson...you might recognize the last name, he's the 2nd generation hockey player of the famed Hanson brothers of Slap Shot.  This Hanson however, doesn't just play tough, he does the little things that make life easier for the other players.  I've always said, that your starting two lines on any hockey team require a play maker, a grinder, and a sniper.  Having these three elements into your line and those roles being played will almost always be successful in the NHL.  On the Leafs first line, they've got Kulemin, Kessell and Bozak.  Kulemin actually fills the role of Grinder quite nicely, but because of his expertise, he's actually a much better sniper.  Under Ron Wilson he has gelled into quite the grinder that not only does the dirty things but can get the job done to get the puck in the back of the net.  Bringing up Christian Hanson and putting him on the top line with Bozak and Kessel will definitely help the cause.  He'll do whats necessary to ensure that Kessell has a clean shot at the net.  And if the goalie makes the save, well Hanson is in the right place to tap in a three foot goal.  Gary Roberts alwas preached, a three feet goal equates to the same thing as a 40 foot goal.

So now your asking yourself, "Bobby, Kulemin has been playing well on the top line where do you drop him to?" The answer to me is simple, for now, he's going to play with Stajan and Hagman.  He's faster than Poni, and gets to the dirty spots more effectively.  In a long term situation (next season), I still see Bozak, Hanson and Kessell as the top line...but on the second line, I see Kulemin, Kadri and maybe Stalberg.  Who knows, if Burke wants to make a splash on July 1st, maybe he signs Kovalchuk...and the leafs second line become the KKK line (fine we'll figure out a better name for that...)

Personally, I don't think Burke will make a splash like that to get Kovalchuk, as I think he'll look to the College ranks again and try and pick and pry his way to get some undrafted draft players.  When you don't have a 1st Round pick, and a 2nd round pick this year, you have to get creative.  He can get two or three strong college players who haven't been drafted, then I think he washes away not having those two picks (even if the pick from Boston equates to Tyler Hall).

The next couple of week's we'll be in for a treat.  The NHL season will shut down temporarily for the Olympic Break, and that will be some fun hockey to watch for sure! And when it resumes, watch out for trades, and playoff races galore.

I'm looking forward to it...so should you...

To end this post off, let me ask all the readers this...what two teams in the NHL don't end in an S...its always fun to have random trivia on the Blog...maybe it will be a trend to come...

Cheers!

All Star Voting is Totally Fu*ked

So as it stands now, well as I write this, Sunday evening while watching NYJ @ SD, Allen Iverson and TMAC will possibly be voted on as All Star starters. WTF. TMAC has not played a game in like two years and is actively being shopped to any and everyone in the NBA. Allen Iverson, had a huge issue signing with a team, then leaves, then signs with the Sixers, had has been plagued with injuries for the entire season. Yet they are leading the guard vote in the east and west respectively. Now I dont know about you guys, but thats total horse shit, its unbelievable, it basically tells you the voting structure the NBA has for the All Star Game is wiggity wack guy.

The fan's decide the starters and the coaches pick the rest of the team, and dont get it twisted, the coaches in any sport not just basketball are totally biased, like totally biased.

So the question is, how do you pick the true All Star Team (NBA wise)?? Light Bulb cue......now. Its simple, you get the players to vote and decide on the team, from the starters to the bench.

You put a couple rules in place, ummm, (1) cant vote for yourself, cause we all know who Lebron James would vote for at PG/SG/SF/PF and C, Lebron James. (2) cant vote for someone on your team, etc, etc...you guys get where im going with this. Also the NBA implements the notion of a "MIN GAMES PLAYED" so even for nostalgia purposes, AI cant voted on cause he's AI, TMAC cant get voted on cause he's TMAC. The only exception or over rule on adding a player would be made by the commissioner for such purpose, like an "honorary all star", so a guy like Shaq who declares retirement, or the feeling is, that he's done, could get put on by Stern and then the commish look like such a good dude. Yaah, David Stern.

and for the game itself, the All Star Game over the last umm, well actually since Jordan played his last All Star Game has been a complete wash, its actually boring, and stupid, and pointless. So you raise the stakes.

2 things you can do, if I were commish, and either do one of the following

1) Winners, each player takes home a cheque for 50Gs Tax Free. I dont know, or who can do it, but someone can make that happen, on top of that, the losing team has to wash the other teams sweats and game worn clothes, all while being video taped for a post all star game, NBA TV special. "Dirty Drawers, the tail of the losers of the 2010 NBA All Star Game"

Ok, yah you guys are thinking im crazy now, but whatever, I can say whatever the hell i want... unrealistic, you say, i say SCREW YOU. The NBA has a lot of money, they can write those cheques w/o blinking. Someone can make it happen.

or//

2) Winners, the NBA finals home team advantage shall be given to the conference that wins the all star game, like baseball, i think baseball does something like that. This way the game actually has some meaning, or you can really pimp it out and say, that the conference that wins the all star game, gets the other players salaries for the year....sick.

either way, the NBA all star game needs to be revamped and reinvented. ill be ranting about this all week as the starters are unveiled tomorrow night....

until then. peace son.

The Road Push: Seprating the men from the boys

As we approach the halfway point of the NBA season, trends are beginning to develop between the contenders, potential contenders and of course the pretenders (cough, cough KNICKS). The obvious teams are there in Boston, LA Lakers, Dallas, The LeBron's (if he's not there, they're pretty much a mens league team), Spurs, Atlanta, and Denver. So what differentiates these teams from the mid level and NBDL teams posing as NBA teams(outside of talent, money, and coaching)? It's the fact that these teams always find ways to win on that the road which is the hardest thing to do in sports. Outside of home field advantage in football, winning on the road in the NBA is extremely difficult. Take out the obvious reasons in why it's hard for teams to win on the road (travel, different timezones, and unfamiliarity of your surroundings) and you see how impressive it really is. Good road teams come out strong and take the game to the home side. In basketball, their are always going be runs from both teams, especially in the 4th quarter when the home team is trailing. The good teams find ways to sustain it and find that road push when they need it. When watching the Raps play last Monday and blowing that 23 pt lead to the Pacers, after the game, Triano says the team didn't have their legs and were fatigued from the game on Sunday. WHAT??? Considering Sunday's game was at 1 pm and Monday's was at 7pm, a fringe team like the Raps should have put it away. For Triano to come up with that excuse like that, it would be like Big Kev telling me that Vince isn't injury prone, he's just allergic to contact. The road teams that struggle usually find themselves down big in the early stages of the game. It's usually in the 3rd quarter after teams make their adjustments when you see the road team come on strong. They usually make that big push and will cut the lead to a one or two possession game. Inevitable happens, the home team calls a timeout to regroup and stop the road teams momentum. The road team has exerted so much energy and effort just to make it close, they can't over come the home sides push. That's why the true contenders get it done on the road. When you see Kobe, LeBron, Melo, and Dirk on the road, they step up their game to villain status. They know if you're beating their team, you gotta go through them. It's kinda cool right now in seeing that evolution with Durant and the Sonics (I don't care, they should be in Seattle and not in New Jack City!!!). As a Raps fan, that's all I want see from these guys. They have a good enough squad to make a good push and have proved they can play with the rest of the league. They just gotta stop relying on that "we didn't have our legs" excuse on the road every time they lose. It's as tiring to hear as seeing Jamario Moon trying to take 3 pointers. Hopefully that time comes soon, where the Raps can go into places like Boston, Cleveland, and LA and beat these guys at their own game. In the 2008 finals between Boston and LA, prior to game 4, it was a home series. What changed? When Boston found their road push and were able to overcome LA's lead to win that game. After that game, everyone knew Boston was winning their ring and there was nothing LA could do about that. It's when you win games like those, ball head recognize and respect your game.

I Will Crush You - live blog - Mavs@Raps - 4th Q - and that's all folks!!

The third Q just ended and we're up 84-68, and the game since the first Q has been all us. Unless some crazy shit takes place, we have all but won this game.

Dirk is totally frustrated and got T'd up, he could have a big 4th Q but the way this game has been dictated and based on the let up in Indiana I don't see it happening.

This was really fun, hope you guys enjoyed the posts, big kev is out, watch some football now!!!

This Lead Is Makin Me Happy - live blog - Mavs@Raps - 3rd Q

Raptors are killing it right now, the first blog of the day I made it clear, the Raptors are playing with fire and are a decent home team. Score right now is 70-56, and its all us, defensively and offensively. I like what I'm seeing from everyone on the court, and the Mavs just don't seem to be clicking today.

The Raps are playing with fire and energy, Bosh has 22-11-2, Andrea is beginning to light it up on the O end of the floor. Now the key, to winning this outright, pressure and no let up. 4min to go in the 3rd he have a long way to go.

And there two shit head mavs fans infront of me that I think are gonna get the Jordan imprint in the back of their stupid heads soon.

Deep Thoughts @ the Half - live blog - Mavs@Raps - Halftime

That's little Johnny, pondering about this game at the half.

Raptors look good so far. Bosh has established himself as a beast, and Jose is playing well, slowly and surely he's going to be re-inserted into the starting five, I don't know if I like that. Let's see if the Raptors can hold on, there up 54-41 at the half, we keep the pressure up and get another scoring threat going, this game will be in the bag.

What's Up With This Guy - live blog - Mavs@Raps - 2nd Q

Ok honestly this guy's hairstyle is pissin me off....like what's wrong with you guy its terrible, a mix of slash, linda and bret hart...
And he has on a weak leather jacket.

2nd Q half way thru. Its 28-25, Raps rallied like I said in the previous post. A lot of action and energy thus far, its pure run and gun and honestly if this pace keeps up, I think it'll work out better for us going into the 4th.

Bosh is getting harassed all over and really needs to re-assert himself and get those stats...Hedo hasn't done shit, his stat line looks like 0-0-0-1 so far. Honestly that guy needs to come off the bench. Dirk still hasn't entered the game tet and we are at the 6min mark. Interesting.

As I post this its 35-29 Raps, looks good.

Andrea All Over It - live blog - Mavs@Raps - 1st Q

Like I called it, Dirk and Andrea are matched up today. Its half way thru the 1st, and Andrea has already established himself in the post, on the boards and is working hard.

We're down 6-12, but those points were off so mis communications, I think we'll get it back. Its nice to see the ACC packed today considering its a Sunday game. Johnny has already been carded by our favorite ACC employee, f'n JESMOND....also Reggie is looking really sharp in a wonderful sitches/exhaust inspired ensemble
