Former WBO welterweight champion Miguel Angel Cotto could potentially make his return to the ring against newly crowned WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman, in which will mark Cotto's first time back in the ring since his 12 round referee stoppage against Manny Pacquiao back in November of last year.
Cotto (34-2, 27 KO'S) is eager anticipating a return to the ring as Top Rank promotion may have a fight lined up already with Foreman. Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KO'S) defeated Daniel Santos on the Pacquiao vs. Cotto under card, becoming the first world champion from Israel. A date hasn't been confirmed for this tilt but rumors are escalating that a June bout in New York could be the destination for the fight. Coincidentally Cotto seems to fight right around that time in June in New York because of the Puerto Rican day festival happening every year.
Both fighters are promoted under the same banner Top Rank Promotions and Cotto's interest in moving up a weight class at 154-pounds seems like a no brainer, considering he is more deadly in the bigger weight class.Junito has stated that once he turns 30 which that will be on 29th of October he will announce his retirement from boxing and focus on helping building a foundation with his wife and kids. This is a perfect opportunity and a great match up for Cotto as he has his eyes set on claiming the WBA junior middleweight title. In an interview he has no plans on changes his mind about his retirement and the fact he hopes Top Rank promoter Bob Arum can set two bouts prior before his announcement. There has been a lot of speculation's Miguel hasn't been the same since his lost to Margarito and during that stretch he has gone 1-2. Coincidentally since the abandoned match between Pacquiao and Mayweather, Pacquiao next set opponent is Joshua Clottey which Clottey lost via split decision during Cotto WBO welterweight title defense back in June of '09.
His 12th round destruction in the hands of Manny Pacquiao has people question as to whether Miguel Cotto can ever be the same Fighter he once was not, nor the premature experience head trainer could be the possible outcome of Cotto's focus. He has taken a punishment in the fight and had used movement on and off during the second half of the tilt to try to slow Pacquiao down. If Cotto plans on choosing this fight against Foreman, the 5'7 Cotto will give up 4 inches in height and five inches of reach. This could be meaningless as Foreman often attacks in close guards to utilize his shots. Foreman is a bigger fighter and is normally used to fighting bigger opponents. A concern to Cotto is the movement that Foreman posses, he doesn't allow his opponent to set up their offenses because he doesn't like to stand up and trade shots. His hit and run style is common to Cotto as he has fought a fighter with a similar style in the likes of Michael Jennings in February of '09.
During the bout with Jennings, Jennings continues to dance around Cotto to avoid heavy damage that Cotto's arsenal possesses and was able to make it to the 5th around until Cotto finally dismantled him. Foreman is more frustrating, because he changes direction a lot of times and loves to dive in to his opponent to punch and clinch. Cotto’s camp need to come up with a plan to initiate his type of style and to counter to Foreman’s use of his head prior to his clinches. In Foreman’s last two outings, he has sustained ugly cuts because of the clashes to the head.
Realistically this is a tough match for Cotto, especially the punishment he received in three of his four bouts Margarito, Mosley, and Pacquiao. However the good news is Foreman does not possess any power to his punches which Cotto has the upper hand. This would be an interesting tilt as to whether or not Cotto has the ability to leave the sport on top.
